<어 White Tiger>

White Tiger has been admired and symbolized since the ancient. It is one of the four sacred guardian animals that symbolize the cardinal points in East Asia and is used in many decorations to pray for the dead souls. One of the examples is as an instrument in Jong-myo-jae-rae-ak. White tiger instrument [ə] is a percussion made of wood, played at the very end of the performance to closure. But white tiger is also rarely found in  nature.

Eversince Mohan, the first white tiger to be captured by humans in the, the number of white tiger increased through incestuous inbreeding. Mohans progenies born after artificially expressing the white tiger factor through inbreeding inherited large and small deformities. They often suffers from Photophobia, a symptom caused by Leucism, which makes their eyes react highly sensitive to the light, thus fear the light.

Inspired by the story of white tiger who fear the light, artist transform into 어 during the performance in reference to Nosferatu. Artist become a white tiger and an instrument, bend the body to be played by other female performer. The volnurable act of two appears in the sudden, when the sound performance come to a lull. The sound of it scratch the space of scilence with the blindingly bright light and disapears into the dark the next minute. It is an act of the closure of performance and also the year of the tiger.

A SYMPHONY OF HORROR

In collaboration with composer and artist Ari Benjamin Meyers, students of the Susan Philipsz class have developed a collective performance inspired by the film Nosferatu, in which individual performances and artistic works are embedded.
